Happy New Year!

Hello Everyone, Happy New Year!

2014 will mark our 5th year of publishing. Hard for me to believe that.  We’re so thankful to all who have supported us throught the years, either by trying our books or reviewing our work and to the more than 200 comic creators whose work has been featured in our pages (often for the very first time).

We had some bumps in the road in 2013. A printer going out of business helped derail production a bit but by the end of the year we’d won Creator of the Year at the Philly Geek awards and gotten nearly all of our scheduled books out. More than 20 books in all.

In 2014 we’re not only publishing more comics, but we want to publish BETTER comics.

The editors and production team are working harder than ever before to bring you the best we can.

I am also commiting to ensure that the orders are in line with print releases so there are no more hiccups in the ordering process. Books will only be offered if they’re in stock already which will hopefully eliminate all of the needless waiting for comics to arrive after you’ve shipped them.

We’ve added Jason Snyder to the production team. He’s been a part of GrayHaven from Day One and he’s going to bring his experience and energy to help us maintain our aggressive schedule and get more books into production at a better rate.

I’m looking to do some more comic cons, preferably some smaller shows and of course some signings at comic shops with the gang. It’s always fun to get to meet with readers directly and also have an opportunity to do portfolio reviews.

We have some exciting things in the works. New issues of 11:59, RUN LIKE HELL and LIVING WITH DEATH are on their way. The debut of TITANIUM STAR! YOU ARE NOT ALONE released in just a few weeks.  A lot more GATHERING! And some very cool projects we’ll be announcing at a later date.

One big goal of mine is to do more with our website, facebook page and twitter. We have the best fans in the world and I want to  give back with contests and other fun stuff. We also want to do some spotlights on other small press comics and bring some attention to other deserving creators.

So first thing’s first. Click on the comments and tell us what you want to see in 2014. It could be what you want to see from us. It could be what you want to see from comics. Heck, it could just be what you want out of life in general in 2014. We’ll choose 5 random winners to receive a small collection of our comics including DOBER-MAN, STEAMPUNK, 11:59, RUN LIKE HELL and LIVING WITH DEATH.

Thanks for being there for us. We wish you a great 2014!

I’d definitely like to see more Limitless titles. They’re so enjoyable to write and the themes have been excellent thus far.

That said, I think we need some more genre mashups. It would be a joy to see and to submit to crime/horror, western/fantasy, war/ancient civilizations.

I also think we need to develop a few in house characters that are property of Greyhaven and writer’ s can contribute a story and the roster of talented creators at Greyhaven can all help to build a canon of character-specific literature.

I look forward to what 2014 has in store for Greyhaven and wish my fellow creators and out readers a Happy 2014!

I’m looking forward to seeing the GrayHaven team continue to work on bigger, relevant projects like You Are Not Alone. This is a book that has a lot of heart and talent behind it and garnered a ton of good press for its positive message.

The phase 2 books I’ve read have been a treat thus far with titles like Mother and Son and Living with Death shining a spotlight on editors who know just as much about creating a comic as they do combing through pitches and putting them together. 2013 was a great year for GH I’m excited to see what the team comes up with next!

Happy New Year to all the great people at GrayHaven Comics and the fellow fans.

2013 put you on my radar and so far it was such a great pleasure following the process and progress of making comics from bare bones. You guys make it look so easy, but we all know that isn’t the case. So, thanks for the timely updates as well.

Spotlight on creators and their main line of work started in 2013 and it’s the greatest way for the new reader to get more info about your books. Keep doing that.

Of course, more Open Submissions are the best way to get the creators engaged in the process.

Open Submission throughout the year for creators who have one-shot ideas.

Helpful tips and guidelines to pitching to improve the quality of submissions, with focus on personal preferences from each editor.

Above all, I wish you all the best year in publishing and a Happy Anniversary.

My wish for GrayHaven is to feature more self contained stories. I’ve really enjoyed Doberman, 1159 and Run Like Hell where your creators get to tell a complete story. I have a lot of the gathering comics too but the anthology only let’s the reader get a small taste of what a creator is capable of and sometimes it’s hit or miss.

My career wish is to hopefully get into one of your publications as a writer. I haven’t submitted anything yet but I think this is the year to go for it.

My wish for everyone is that this year is filled with dreams acheived.

My 2014 resolution is support more small and indie comic publishers! I really started expanding my horizons in 2013 and I want to continue discovering great new books.

It’s been a great run for Grayhaven, and I’m honored to have been a part of it. Working with you guys, and getting to read all of the great stories that come from those crazy brilliant minds has been a blast. Going into 2014 I just want to see Grayhaven grow even greater, help even more people realize their inner creator, and bring more people into comics, from both a creator, and a reader perspective. I’ll always be a supporter. Here’s to 2014!

    Happy New Year GrayHaven staff!

I agree with Wes Locher: I’d love to see a few more big projects by teams pulled from the formidable ranks of GH’s staff and contributors. You have a lot of talent to tap into – so go big or go home! Look what is happening with YANA – everyone involved deserves to be very proud of that project! It’s proof of what GH is capable of, even with major production obstacles.

Franklin also makes the point that we only get a small taste of some very good stories in the anthologies. No complaints about that, but how about growing a few of them? Perhaps a poll or two to find a readers’ and/or editors’ favorite “short” and then nurture a couple of winners into one-shots for the following year? I can think of a few anthology entries that I would love to read as fully realized books.

I also agree that your website and Facebook page are a bit under-utilized. (Andrew, you do a pretty decent job covering Twitter although where you find the time I don’t know!) If you don’t already have this in place, I suggest trying to find someone who would be dedicated to activating your online presence more, contests and “fun stuff” included. A regular (weekly?) Indie Reviews column would be a nice way to spotlight other small press comics creators, alongside the continued Spotlights on GH’s own creators and books. That could be done by independent reviews, alternating among a small group of GH-based reviewers, or even by having a single “voice of GH” writer to start. I guess my point is, it seems as though every existing GH staff member is so busy already, if you’re going to add more content, you need someone to help you do it. These types of changes are going to take more of that teamwork that forms part of GrayHaven’s core values.

I think you’re poised to do whatever you want to do. Here’s to a fantastic 2014…and beyond!

I would suggest more books like You Are Not Alone where there is content with a message. I read the PDF you made available for backers and was so impressed with the professionalism and content. You made a statement with the book and handled tough subjects with maturity and dignity in a way that could be read safely by people of all ages, particularly young kids who may benefit most from it. I’d like to see you do more of that.

My other wish is that larger comic companies move away from the gimmick covers and unrelenting events and renumbering and just get back to telling stories about these incredible characters that have endured for generations

P.S: It pretty much goes without saying that if you’re going to increase your Con presence, you need an up-to-date Con list running on all social media. And where Cons are concerned, have you ever had any of your up-and-coming anthology contributors appear with GH staff? That might be a win-win-win: good publicity for GH, fun and industry exposure for your most talented contributors, and attendees get the opportunity to talk with new creators who are just getting started. (Maybe you’ve already done this, but I thought it was an idea worth mentioning).

    Over and out.
