THE BEST COMICS OF 2013

2013 WAS A GREAT YEAR FOR COMICS! The industry continued to diversify with more companies offering an endless variety of titles. The increasing popularity of digital has allowed more ways for comics to be discovered and the success of crowd-funding has offered even small press creators the opportunity to get their work into people’s hands.

There’s work to be done. Terry Moore recently talked about how poor sales on RACHEL RISING may lead him to stop doing the book.  One of the best comics of the past few years, it’s a damn shame a book like RACHEL RISING struggles to get traction but when the Big Two are stuffing the shelves with variants and events and double shipping it’s hard for even the best known indies (I mean come on, this is Terry Moore of STRANGERS IN PARADISE. He won an Eisner!) to get placement.  When even comic legends are having difficulty breaking out, it shows how tough the road is for anyone.

My hope for 2014 is that comic sites spend more time seeking out and focusing on the indie books and not just in December when they do their ‘Best of’ lists. Sure the latest news on Batman’s costume change and Spider-Man’s new identity will drive readers to the site but it can’t hurt to spend more time covering indie titles. Review RACHEL RISING or MIND MGMT or SHELTERED every month and give them the attention the big two titles get. Do interviews with the creators and let them sell the book. Run contests giving away some indie comics. There is a lot more to look forward to in 2014 than the next big Marvel or DC event. Share some space discussing the return of STRAY BULLETS and STRANGEHAVEN. Do as many articles about Remender’s BLACK SCIENCE as his UNCANNY AVENGERS. Open your world and help inform those who don’t know what is out there in this wonderful world of comics.

Our goal is to do the same. Every other week or so I give away around 30 free comic codes on twitter. Next year we’re going to start giving some trades and single issues of indie books away as well to give readers a chance to experience something they may not be familiar with.

Now people may be thinking, if we are a small press company how can we ‘review’ other comics. It’s not appropriate. Screw that. I was a comic fan long before I ever became a comic creator.  I love this industry and I am a fan of Big Two super hero titles as much as the small press self-pubs and everything in between and want to share our choices. So here is my list for the best comics of 2013. Maybe some of the other editors will share their picks.  Let us know what YOU think.

First up are the honorable mentions. These are 5 series that have gotten off to amazing starts but are still too new to merit being included in the overall ‘Best of 2013’.
