GRAYHAVEN COMICS APPRENTICE- Challenge 5- The Rewrite

Okay, thanks for all your hard work as we tested your promotional and marketing skills last week. But we are searching for a writer, and so it’s back to the creative challenges!

Creativity is one of the most important elements a writer has, but you also need to be able to roll with the punches if you’re working for an editor. We’ve seen a lot of stories about creative differences on big two properties, writers leaving books, and last-minute changes. There’s even been some cases where a company decided they wanted to change the ending of a major event at the very last minute.

So this week, we’re putting you in the writer’s chair for a last-minute switch on some of the most controversial storylines of all time. This challenge is The Rewrite.

You’re the writer on a story that is about to kill a major character, but at the last minute, there’s a change of plans. Maybe the internet (assuming the internet existed back then) got ahold of these plans and is enraged. Maybe the company is worried about the blowback. But the one thing that’s sure is, the company doesn’t want this character killed off after all. So it’s up to you to come up with an alternate ending…now!

Your choices are the following story lines.

1. The Death of Gwen Stacy, the major character death that has lasted the longest and set the rule that “No one is safe”. The editors want Gwen to survive, but what happens after that is up to you. They do want to elevate Mary Jane to a major character in the title like they were planning to, but without Gwen being dead.

2. The Death of Jason Todd, the first Robin to die. This was a close vote based on the audience’s preferences, and many of his fans were extremely upset. The editors want Jason to survive, leaving him open for a role in the Bat-family, but they do want to introduce Tim Drake to the Bat-family as well. How you balance that is up to you.

3. The Death of Ultimate Peter Parker, the most recent of the three. While Marvel is very much behind the idea of Miles Morales, they’re worried about the backlash from killing off the incredibly popular star of the title. They want you to find a way to keep Peter on the table in some form, while also introducing Miles and making him a new star for the title.

4. The Governor’s Last Stand at The Prison, This was the first Walking Dead storyline to REALLY make us believe no one was truly safe. Kirkman killed a BABY! Fans were more shocked than upset, and you can tell that something like that wouldn’t appeal to a mass audience as they kept the baby around on the TV show. The folks at Image have convinced you (as Robert Kirkman) that you can’t possibly kill of Lori and baby Judith. But SOMEONE needs to die to give this story the impact that you had in mind. What do you do?

Whichever of these four storylines you choose, here’s what we want from you.

– The storyline you have chosen, and why you think keeping this character alive will be beneficial for the title in the long run.

– A scripted scene of three pages showing how this character survives and the immediate aftermath. You’ll start right before the character’s death scene in the comics.

– An outline for the next year of stories, showing how the survival of this character impacts the title and creates a new direction.

– Any longer-term plans you want to establish for the title, briefly.

This challenge will be judged on the new direction you create and whether we think it’s a good one for the title, as well as the quality of your scripted scene.

This challenge will be due Tuesday, August 27th at 5 PM EST. Let us know if you have any questions, and who your PMs are. Good luck!
