Staff Picks: Our Favorite Comics of 2011

We debated on whether to do a ‘Best of’ List here at GrayHaven. To be honest, we weren’t sure whether it’d be appropriate to comment on or rank other publisher’s work but the bottom line is all of us are fans of the comic book industry and this was a really great year for quality comics and we wanted to talk about what we loved. Each of us went through and chose only their absolute favorite in each category… except for a few of us who cheated.

Now we present The GrayHaven Staff picks for ‘favorite’ comic books of 2011.

I’ve read and enjoyed almost everything on those lists. Is it possible that we have so many titles in common?

Great picks, and some of you guys have led me to read comics that I otherwise wasn’t picking up, so I’ll have a new list to check out. Here are my picks:

Super Hero Comic of the Year: Ultimate Comics Spider-Man (Marvel)
Indie/Creator Owned Comic of the Year: Morning Glories (Image/Shadowline)
OGN of the Year: Incredible Change-Bots Two by Jeffrey Brown (Top Shelf)
Collected Edition of the Year: X-Statix Omnibus (Marvel)
Character of the Year: Batman (DC)
Writer of the Year: Joe Hill (The Cape, Locke & Key)
Artist of the Year: Terry Moore (Echo, Rachel Rising)

Other OGN’s and collections I would recommend:
The Tooth by Cullenn Bunn, Shawn Lee, and Matt Kindt (Oni Press)
We3 Deluxe Edition by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely (DC/Vertigo)
Joe the Barbarian by Grant Morrison and Sean Murphey (DC/Vertigo)
Saga of the Swamp Thing Book 4 by Alan Moore and Stephen Bissette (the HC of book 4 came out in Feb of 2011, Books 3 & 4 are the best of Moore’s run) (DC/Vertigo)
Chester 5000-XYV by Jess Fink (Top Shelf)
Gingerbread Girl by Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover (Top Shelf)

I haven’t read this yet, but I can’t wait to get my hands on it:
The Death-Ray by Daniel Clowes (Drawn and Quarterly)

  5. Marc Deschamps January 3, 2012 at 3:12 pm #

Good picks by everyone. Solid choices. Haven’t read any of Ellis’ Secret Avengers, but I’m eager to check out the issue he did with the amazing Alex Maleev.
